Creating a Beautiful Environment for a Family with Accessibility Requirements

Michelle’s Interiors began this project with the important responsibility of creating a space that allowed full wheelchair accessibility on the first floor.  Assessing your day to day needs is vitally important when determining the best way to make your home work for you. When reviewing the families needs, Michelle quickly realized that a remodel was necessary.

Overhauling the Space Plan

The scope of the project required a new layout that would allow for easy navigation throughout the first floor. This meant opening walls and creating new traffic patterns. Beginning with the heart of the home, we expanded the kitchen walls to widen for the ease of flow. Creating this space allowed for access around the island as well as provided maximum cabinet storage. We specified porcelain flooring  for it’s durability, smooth transitions, and low maintenance. Moving the walls attached to this section of the home allowed for the construction of a back entrance from the garage as well as a much needed first floor laundry room.

Located off the kitchen, we designed a four seasons room for the whole family to enjoy. This room allows them to cherish the sunshine and take in the outdoors, even during the cold winter months with their family and friends. Their dog, Lexi, can often be found curled up in her coordinating bed or keeping an eye on the backyard through the full scale windows. When the weather is right they can all transition out onto their new deck!

The majority of the project was focused on making it easier and more comfortable to get around the first floor while managing in a wheelchair, however we did include the lower level and second floor in our scope of work. The basement was redesigned to accommodate a live-in healthcare provider including their own bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, and lounge area. On the second floor we designed a beautiful new master suite as well as a fun teen bedroom.

Jordyn Chapman“Everyone at Michelle’s Interiors helped me to create a unique, cozy bedroom that was everything I was hoping for and then some. I had a vision of what I wanted my new bedroom to look like, Michelle listened to my ideas, and they turned them into a design that perfectly matched my personality. I love spending time in my brand new room. They were all so fun to work with and couldn’t have been more helpful. I miss having them around! Definitely the best experience ever!!” – Xoxo Jordyn Chapman
